LEARNING TO SHARE<\/strong><\/p>\n

we try to be good neighbors
\nwith an open gate welcome
\nfor all manner of furry and feathered friends
\nwe delight in hummingbird antics
\nwobbly knees of spotted deer
\nraucous cacophony of silver throated songbirds
\nparades of turkeys strutting and scavenging
\noccasional passage of elusive elk
\nmassive moose, cagey coyote
\nall the while watching cherries turn red
\ntomatoes grow plump
\nan abundance of pears maturing toward
\nanother batch of gingered pear preserves<\/p>\n

enter yard left
\none medium sized male moose
\nwith impenetrable focus locked on pear trees
\ninitially amused, increasingly indignant
\nwe yelled, slammed, sprayed
\nand watched the creature rip and chew
\nstare back and stand his ground
\nstomp off and wander back
\nkneel and stretch, crunch and drool
\nhis way through everything within reach
\nleaving trees tightly trimmed
\na smattering of pears to ripen in the heights
\nwhile we wistfully long for jam<\/p>\n

committed to living hospitality
\nwe ponder sharing space with an inconsiderate behemoth
\nwith an insatiable appetite
\nnot inclined to fend him off with a fence or gun
\n[they were here first after all
\nafter generations of open grazing on all trees
\nhave been exiled by us]
\nwe elect instead to receive the guest
\nenjoy the show
