On March 2, a niece posted this photo on Facebook, saying, “Look what I found.” <\/em>
\nIt is a photo from our wedding, posted two days before our twenty-fourth anniversary.<\/em><\/p>\n


\nTwenty-Four Years<\/b><\/p>\n

10 births, 3 deaths
\nor should I count 4?
\nif so, then
\n8 weddings, 4 divorces
\nand 1 on the way
\nassociate\u2019s, bachelor\u2019s degrees earned, PhD ABD
\nhouses bought and sold
\nsurgeries, addictions, accidents, rehab
\nchemo, radiation, chemo again
\none leg amputated
\nfamily farm sold
\nherd moved down the road, then released
\na remnant preserved, transported west to carry on<\/p>\n

we\u2019ve welcomed the newborn, accompanied the dying
\ndanced at each other\u2019s weddings, picniced at each other\u2019s graves
\nworked side by side and scattered across the country
\ntalked every day or only occasionally
\nhung up on each other, rarely bothered to reach out at all
\ntaken each other home, taken each other to court
\nstood by each other and stood our ground
\nbroken each other\u2019s hearts and offered shelter in the storm<\/p>\n

we bear less likeness to the Waltons every year
\nno matriarch, no patriarch
\nno family home
\nface to face and miles apart
\nwe spiral further away and out of reach
\nbut we\u2019re still family
\nconnected by an invisible chord
\nnot always nurturing
\nbut colored by DNA and a resemblance
\nrooted in a people and place
\nthat define who we are
\nbind us as one<\/p>\n
